Curtin University has a Law School campus in Perth’s Central Business District within an existing 1912 heritage listed building located at 57 Murray Street. Situated in the Perth CBD in close proximity to the Federal Court, Supreme Court, District Court and Perth Magistrate’s Court, as well as statutory tribunals such as the State Administrative Tribunal, the city campus facilitates students’ education within an applied industry setting in line with Curtin’s primary vision of developing job-ready graduates. The new facility also provides a unique home for the Law School and provides a hub for both formal and informal interactions between the staff, students and members of the Western Australian legal profession.
The Curtin University Learning Institute team were integral in optimising teaching and learning in the building through the use of state-of-the-art collaborative and distributed learning space design and learning technologies. These facilities include a technologically equipped moot court, allowing for both traditional and seminar based learning, as well as practical interactions.
Since late February 2017, the Law School has operated the John Curtin Law Clinic from the premises. Through the Law Clinic, final year undergraduate law students provide WA small businesses with legal advice and assistance under the supervision of legal practitioners. Small businesses receive legal advice and information on a range of commercial matters including retail tenancy, franchise agreements, employment law and court procedures. In this way, the John Curtin Law Clinic offers improved access to justice for local small businesses while simultaneously giving law students the opportunity to develop practical legal skills.
Murray Chambers was established and co-located within the Curtin Law School in March 2017. Led by Christopher Shanahan SC, this group of highly experienced independent barristers has committed to a collaborative arrangement with Curtin University that will provide our law students with unique access and insight into the legal profession.
